IS EVIL A PRIVATION OF THE GOOD OR IS IT A THING?
According to Plato, evil is not real. The Form of the Good is the source of all reality. Therefore, all that is real is good. By borrowing Plato’s metaphysics into Christianity, St. Augustine asserts that evil is a privation of the good, evil is not something. God created all things and God did not create evil.
If evil is the absence of the good, meaning there is no presence of evil since evil is not a thing. Then the question is: What is present? If not the good and nothing else, what is? Therefore, good and evil both exist and at the opposite sides of the same scale. Both are co-existing in duality with each other. Both are ‘things’.
It is correct only to a little degree to say that evil is the privation of the good. Metaphorically, let’s take black and white as an example of the opposites. Saying evil is the absence of good is like saying black is the absence of white. Is it not that white is the absence of black? Thus, it is yet to be accepted as a comprehensive ethical code. What would make better sense then is that: Both good and evil co-exist, as has been said, in duality.
Generally speaking, killing is evil while saving someone away from pain is good. Let’s put on our white coat and walk into an Intensive Care Unit right now and consider mercy killing or euthanasia of a terminally ill patient. If evil is just a privation of good, then what is of absence in our act of euthanasia? Perhaps we see the absence of good. Perhaps we see nothing if evil is not a thing. Or perhaps it is the presence of both good and evil that contributes to this popular controversy. Grey is what we get when we mix white and black.
Let’s carefully recall one time in our past that we criticized about someone being evil. When we are told, “That man is evil”, we innocently think about him being evil from head to toe and inside out. Strictly speaking, the so-called evil man still has the potential within to do something good. There is never ‘absence of the good’.
Good is real. Evil is real. Both are real. The good is the evil. The evil is the good. 8月9日 who 14月25日 PROCESSI asked myself one day : What fuels my creative process ?
I answered many years later : The process itself. |
